Workshop Summery

Join us for a comprehensive Victoria Bird Photography Workshop, where we will explore the diverse and rich birdlife of the greater Victoria area. This five-day workshop will provide you with opportunities to photograph a wide variety of bird species, including waterfowl such as Wood Ducks, Harlequin Ducks, Buffleheads, and Hooded Mergansers; birds like Anna’s Hummingbirds, Varied Thrushes, and American Dippers; and shorebirds including Black Oystercatchers, Black Turnstones, Surfbirds, and Dunlins. Our expert guides, Jared Vandermeer and Travis Layton, will offer personalized instruction and hands-on guidance to help you capture stunning images of these birds in their natural habitats.

Our workshop includes morning and afternoon photography sessions, with a midday break for lunch and an in-class workshop session. Evenings are left free for participants to explore Victoria at their leisure or relax. This workshop is perfect for photographers of all levels who want to improve their skills and experience the beauty of bird photography.

During the workshop, you’ll have the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of bird species:

Waterfowl:

Wildlife is unpredictable and therefore we cannot guarantee that we will be able to get shots of every bird on this list

About the Area

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is surrounded by diverse landscapes that are home to a rich array of bird species. The greater Victoria area offers excellent opportunities for bird photography, with its mix of coastal, freshwater, and forested habitats.

Participants will explore various locations in the greater Victoria area, chosen for their excellent opportunities to observe and photograph a wide variety of bird species. The exact locations will be kept confidential to protect the natural habitats and ensure a unique experience for workshop attendees.

Accommodation and Meals

Accommodation and meals are not included in the workshop fee. Participants are responsible for arranging their own lodging and meals, except for lunch, which we will have together during the workshop.

Transportation

We provide transportation for the duration of the workshop. Participants will be picked up from the Fairmont Hotel in Victoria each morning and driven to various shooting locations. We will also drive participants to lunch each day.

Daily Schedule

Day 1-5

Morning photography session focused on various bird species.
Group lunch break.
Afternoon photography session focused on various bird species.
In-class workshop session to review photos and discuss techniques.
Evenings are free for participants to explore Victoria or relax.

Physical Requirements

This workshop is designed for participants of all fitness levels. You’ll experience gentle walks through various natural habitats where birds frequent. The walking distances are moderate, ensuring comfort as you explore and photograph these dynamic birds. We recommend sturdy yet comfortable footwear, like walking shoes or hiking boots, to provide stability during the exploration. Participants should be able to manage their photography equipment for capturing unique moments of bird activity and the natural beauty of the Victoria area.

Equipment Recommendations

Camera Equipment

Camera body (DSLR or Mirrorless)
Telephoto lenses: A telephoto lens no shorter than 400mm for close-ups of hummingbirds. A
shorter prime or fast zoom lens (70-200mm or 100-400mm) for creative shots.
A Tripod, tripod head, and lens plate
Rain cover for camera and lens
Camera cleaning kit ( air blower, microfibre cloth, etc.)
Spare batteries and memory cards
Laptop and hard drive for storing photos

Clothing
In March, Victoria can be chilly and rainy, so it’s important to be prepared for varying weather conditions. Dressing in layers is recommended to stay comfortable throughout the day.

Waterproof and windproof jacket
Warm layers, including a fleece or insulated jacket
Long-sleeve shirts and thermal undershirts
Waterproof pants or quick-dry hiking pants
Waterproof, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots
Warm hat and gloves
Sunglasses and a brimmed hat
Sunscreen with high SPF
Comfortable, moisture-wicking socks (merino wool)
Umbrella or rain poncho
